"Freckle Juice" by Judy Blume is a funny easy chapter book in the genre of realistic fiction. Main character Andrew Marcus wants freckles after noticing his classmate Nicky has them. In fact, Andrew wants freckles so bad that he buys a secret recipe for freckle juice from Sharon for fifty cents, his five-week allowance. But freckle juice does not work as expected. Andrew has to draw fake freckles with a blue marker. At school, Andrew's teacher gives him a "freckle remover" to remove the blue freckles. Children in second grade and third grade will enjoy reading this humorous story.

After twists and turns, the two children bring the wild mare and her colt Misty to their home on Chincoteague Island. In the end, they have to decide whether to set Phantom free. "Misty of Chincoteague", a Newbery Honor Book, appeals to children in third grade through seventh grade, especially kids who like good horse stories.

The pumpkin grows so big that the witch cannot yank it from the vine. Some traditional Halloween characters come to help, but neither the ghost, nor the vampire, nor the mummy can make it budge. Finally a bat comes up with a good idea. They line up and pull together. Off comes the big pumpkin. The colorful illustrations by S.D. Schindler is a little spooky but not scary. With predictable rhyming texts, the picture book is good for reading aloud. Kids can also see the value of cooperation and teamwork.

The simplified vocabulary and the bold illustrations are well suited for toddlers and preschoolers. The picture book also teaches opposites such as hot or cold, big or small, fast or slow. "The Three Bears" is a good read aloud book.
